Chinese people have used lacquer to decorate and furnish ornaments for a long time. Lacquer wares have been found among the archaeological finds dating from thousands of years ago. The modern art form of polished lacquer painting combines the skills for making traditional lacquer wares with modern art design ideas. The tools that lacquer painting artists use include those that are used by craftsmen to make furniture. Artists use lacquer as the primary paint medium, and large, colorful objects can be represented by applying materials like egg shells or sea shells to the painting. Colorful minerals--like turquoise and pyrite--and metals--gold, silver and brass?re also often applied to the painting.
An artist first needs to select a piece of wood (usually plywood) for the backing. For an especially large painting, an aluminum sheet is often used in place of wood if such a large piece of wood would be prohibitively heavy. Layers of linen canvas are then stretched across the surface of the backing board and adhered using a neutral color of lacquer paint appropriate to the background of the painting. Each layer much dry and be polished before another layer is applied. The artist can then carefully sketch or carve the patterns and content of the painting.
The next step is to apply pre-made colored lacquer paints along with other materials like eggshells and seashells to portray the image the artist has in mind. This process may be repeated several times to produce the desired effects, and each artist develops his or her own techniques. The lacquer painting artists of Fujian Province are known for applying paint in varying thicknesses to produce desired color tones, giving their paintings a distinctive appearance. Non-paint materials like pearls, eggshells, gold, silver and tin are applied when the artist finds them useful for portraying objects in the painting.
